Journey
Craig Ashley David, known professionally as Craig David, was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England. Raised in a musical household, his father, George David, a Grenadian musician influenced him, and developed an interest in singing, songwriting, and production during his teenage years. He began performing in local clubs and recording demos before entering the professional music industry.
David first gained national attention in 1999 through his feature on Artful Dodger’s “Re-Rewind,” a landmark UK garage hit that helped define the era’s garage and R&B crossover sound. The success of that single led to his debut album “Born to Do It” in 2000, which became a major commercial breakthrough and established him as one of Britain’s leading contemporary R&B artists. The album produced hits including “Fill Me In,” “7 Days,” “Walking Away,” and “Rendezvous.”
He maintained a steady recording career with “Slicker Than Your Average” (2002), “The Story Goes...” (2005), “Trust Me” (2007), and “Signed Sealed Delivered” (2010). After a six-year recording gap, he returned with “Following My Intuition” (2016), which debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and marked a significant creative resurgence. He followed with “The Time Is Now” (2018), “22” (2022), and “Commitment” (2025), bringing his studio album total to nine.
Known for combining smooth R&B vocals with UK garage rhythms, David has collaborated with artists including Sting, Tinchy Stryder, Big Narstie, Tiwa Savage, JoJo, Bastille, AJ Tracey, Sigala, and Galantis. His cross-generational collaborations have allowed him to remain relevant across changing musical landscapes.
David has received multiple BRIT Award nominations, MOBO Award recognition, and Ivor Novello nominations for songwriting. He is widely regarded as one of the artists who helped bring UK garage into the mainstream and shape the sound of modern British R&B. Beyond recording, he has built a successful career as a DJ and live performer through his TS5 sessions, which combine DJing, MCing, and live vocals.
